Mobile devices are playing a big role in the everyday life and work of billions of people. Yet, their security is often neglected and that’s not good.
According to a 2018 report by the Ponemon Institute, the average cost of a corporate data breach is going up by 6.4% to $3.86 million. Sadly, there’s no easy way to tell what part of is thanks to breaches via mobile devices.
Still, these days our phones are treasure troves filled with both personal and corporate data. Granted, mobile OSes generally are a bit better protected and mobile malware in general is still not that capable.
Despite this, mobile security is still a very important branch of your overall corporate cybersecurity strategy. It’s not something to be neglect or take with less importance. In fact, you should make sure your products and services stay on top of the mobile threats as it’s better to be even a bit “over-prepared” than to have to scramble for solutions and play catch-up.
Stats for days
And things don’t look all that well when you check out a few more statistics. Veracode for example says that the average large enterprise has over 2000 unsafe apps installed on employee devices. Yikes.
Raytheon says 82% of cybersecurity professionals predict unsecured IoT devices will be a reason for a data breach at their organization. Double yikes.
IDG also says 74% of IT leaders from global enterprises already report their organization has experienced a data breach because of a mobile security issue. You guessed it – triple yikes.
Also, a Cisco research shows that cybersecurity pros rank mobile devices as the most hardest enterprise asset to defend. Finally, Verizon research points that 93% of security pros agree mobile security needs to be taken more seriously. Add to all of this the fact that employees tend do do a lot more work on their phones like emails and opening and editing documents, and you have all the reasons why mobile security should be a priority.
